Tik Tok on the Chopping Block - 04/25/2024
Yesterday, Joe Biden signed the Tik Tok Divest-or-Ban bill into law. I covered this bill extensively in my post, "Tik Tok Bill/HR 7521" back on March 16th of this year. This bill forces ByteDance to sell Tik Tok within one year. It's clear to me that this Chinese owned company is controlled by the CCP and is using it to gather information on US citizens and influence children toward committing self-harm and suicide.
Tik Tok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew released the following video statement yesterday. "Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on you and your voice. We are confident, and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again." He was referring to how they circumvented Trump's executive order to ban the app in the U.S. back in 2020. Tik Tok's position is that through China's Counterespionage Law, its customer data is stored in Virginia and backed up in Singapore. They claim that they have never or ever will share U.S. data with the CCP. Yet the owner of ByteDance previously issued a letter of apology to the CCP about failing to follow the CCP's directives. It's obvious to me that they are more of an arm of the CCP than a private company and we should not trust them. At the same time, I'm also conflicted about trusting our own government. Regardless it's now signed into law, like it or not.
Tik Tok and ByteDance together spent over $7 million since the beginning of this year on TV and digital ads in an effort to stop legislation from passing the bill. A Tik Tok spokesperson said this, "This expenditure reflects work we do to educate policy makers about how legislation could affect our community of 170 million American users." Tik Tok officials lobbied Congress and Biden's executive office last quarter. Biden's executive office contains the National Security Council, the Office Management and Budget, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and other divisions.
As I mentioned in my previous post on this bill last March, Donald Trump and Elon Musk both came out against it. Trump is concerned that it could expand government powers on other platforms, and Musk is concerned about censorship. The bill is intended to remove any foreign influence and investment in social media platforms and websites here in the U.S. The government would have to prove that a foreign entity is directly involved and then initially force divestment, and then later if necessary deplatform the app and shut down their operating websites.
I'm all for private companies operating platforms that allow freedom of expression, but not if they're being operated by a foreign adversary like China's CCP. Yet I'm always very skeptical of our government and their tendencies to over-reach in order to go after their political opposition. Especially with this current bunch in charge. All we can do is to stay informed and hopefully for the sake of our freedom and security vote in Republican majorities in both the house and senate, and get Donald Trump back into office, in my opinion.

i'm like actually legitimately loving that the result of the tiktok ban is decimating decades of propaganda against china in record time. everyone is flocking to the actual chinese-owned version of tiktok called rednote where they are being welcomed so warmly with the silliest jokes like "i'm your assigned chinese spy! i've been waiting for you! welcome!" alskdjgsld. folks are already making attempts to learn some mandarin to better interact with the chinese users. everyone realizing what our own government collects on us is twice as harmful as anything ccp could do with it. everyone waking up to the fact that every fucking facet of the american internet is designed to harvest and sell personal data off of you so what the fuck does it actually matter anyway if one more entity does it. us government managed to speedrun undoing their own fucking brainwashing it's so goddamn funny.

I have yet to see an argument against rednote that is valid and not just the manifestation of the red scare and American exceptionalism. “But.. but the CCP is stealing your data and selling it to their government!1!” WOAH REALLY? wow, I sure am glad that I use Facebook and Instagram instead, American apps that were some of the first ever worldwide to specifically steal and sell Americans information to the us government! I Really dodged a bullet there! “But, but the CCP is commiting a genocide?!!” Yeah, and that’s horrible, reprehensible, but so is what the United States has done, multiple genocides in the past few years alone actually, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, all genocides funded and influenced if not outright carried out by the United States government. “Yeah well, well did you know that the Chinese are only nice to foreigners? They HATE eachother!!!” ???? Have you??? Seen ??? How?? We?? Have?? Treated?? Eachother?? The?? Past?? 8?? Years??? Like really? THATS your bombshell mic drop argument?? And finally, of course, “but-but China wants to sell you PROPAGANDA!!” Like what? That the United States is an oppressive imperial entity that controls the world through fear?? Yeah, no fucking shit bitch, I’ve BEEN knew, I LIVE here. All of these arguments, all of these claims of American superiority, are the result of DECADES of carefully crafted propaganda and paranoia campaigns designed specifically to convince you that communism is some great unimaginable evil in order to shift your eyes away from the actions of our OWN government. We are no better, and no worse, than the CCP, and anyone who believes otherwise, is one of the hundreds of millions who has been successfully duped by the most powerful empire in the world.

Live Laugh Loving the way my newest form of entertainment is just... telling people in China basic facts about America.
Things that suprise them so far...
The cost of my hospital visit
The fact that my friend needs 2 jobs to survive
The interest rates on the credit card applications for people with "good credit"
Why homelessness exists
The fact that people donate plasma to survive
The fact that some American parents will just kick their kids out of the house and provide no further support
The cost of food
The cost of college
Myths I dispelled about America
They thought we all worked 4 hours a day and were lazy
They thought Elon Musk and Trump were real rags to riches stories
They thought we all got free Healthcare and college education
They thought we made $1M a year
This is in no way me saying I support the CCP. It's just really weird seeing people in China be like "Yo... are you okay? This sounds really really illegal..."

Also I think this is another wonderfully disturbing example of how no one can just have an opinion anymore they have to jump to the farthest extreme and support that. Did you know you can think the tiktok ban is a violation of freedom of speech laws and also not spread 92929292 memes about how it's cool and based and woke that Gen Z is en mass intentionally sharing their sensitive data with the fucking CCP as a FUCK YOU MOM because they're mad their favorite time wasting algorithm is gonna get taken away. The CCP executed at least 3k people in 2024 according to Amnesty International idk if y'all might find that relevant.

Americans using RedNote because of the upcoming US TikTok ban just to realize that people from China are actually indeed people just like them and that all the western propaganda they've been fed is nonsense is so funny to me

For those wondering why the death of the 1st Amendment in America, the US TikTok ban, has not resulted in a surge here on Tumblr...
Our beloved Tumblr is banned in China.
Most TikTok users already tried Tumblr and didn't like it. (Look at how short their attention span is!)
Tumblr isn't great for 杀猪盘 or "pig butchering scam" -- hell, the Gaza scammers we do have can barely make a living off your broke-ass asses!
Let it be known:
*ahem*
Henceforth: my blog shall be crapping out queued posts for "Jan 19 anniversary of US TikTok ban day to all who celibrate" long after I'm dead and well into the next millennium...
